Jill Stein in Cornwall

19th century coastal house renovated with contemporary interior

Jill Stein, former wife of chef Rick Stein continues to play an important part in the family business where she is in charge of interior design for the restaurants and hotels. She also travels widely, sourcing stock for the Stein Shop, Padstow's foremost design store. Jill's home is the seaside house where the Stein's three sons grew up but she has skilfully refurbished and extended the building over the past couple of years, giving the classic, double-fronted Georgian property a contemporary look which co-exists with her collection of art, books and decorative antiques. An excellent cook, Jill chose Bulthaup for the newly designed kitchen which incorporates an extensive island unit with a white Corian worktop. An adjoining extension houses the open plan sitting and dining area where folding glass doors lead onto the deck where Jill added an outside sitting area complete with log fire. A fire also features in the main bathroom/dressing room which now incorporates a walk in shower, a free standing tub and extensive hanging space for clothes. Natural materials and white walls continue the look in the adjoining bedroom, with curtains of linen and embroidered voile providing a feminine touch. The guest bedroom has been hand-painted - a decorative floral design in topaz blue extends across the walls adding a Mediterranean flourish to a solid Cornish stone house.
