Wiltshire Winter

Country home in Wiltshire reinterpreting classic 18th century pieces in a contemporary manner.

Country home in Wiltshire of furniture designer Leo Vaughan Williams, wife Sarah and their three year old twins. Leo formerly an English furniture expert at Christies' in London and New York has designed a small range of furniture and accessories (www.beckforduk.com) reinterpreting classic 18th century pieces in a contemporary manner. He redesigned the barn-like kitchen dining room of the Georgian farmhouse to make it both family friendly and suitable for entertaining - the children can sit up at the counter and watch the action or share family meals at the dining table. The console tables and lamps are Leo's designs whilst works by contemporary artists are displayed on the walls. In order to house his library of books, Leo transformed the stone-flagged entrance hall by lining it with custom-made shelving with brass inserts incorporated into the uprights - a detail inspired by Sir John Soane's famous library in London's Soane Museum. For the sitting room Leo has combined antiques with pieces from his own range - the seating cubes and coffee and side tables are all his and the sofas were made to his own specifications.
