A triumph of restoration

1740's village house in Provence, France

The London based owner of this 1740's village house in Provence first saw it when it was run as a 10 room B&B. The house was built over much earlier foundations and in 2 parts - the right side is probably 19th century. After looking for a family holiday home for some time he was staying here in 2007 when the elderly owners suggested buying it as they wanted to retire. It has been a major project to bring the house back to a comfortable, 6 bed family home. Walls were stripped of hessian coverings, 1930's partitions, old bathrooms and a grim catering kitchen were removed and all the electrical wiring had to be replaced. Much of the work was undertaken by the owner on a very limited budget while part of the furnishing was provided by his mother who had recently sold her house in the region. She was also able to spend time overseeing certain areas of the project while her son was working in London. On the ground floor the walls are made of creamy white stone blocks with similar floors which creates interiors which are light and calm with touches of colour by pretty old china, a vivid throw on the sofa and plenty of texture. The master bedroom features plenty of pink and white toile, white walls and linen and seagrass carpet. The place is unrecognisable and a triumph of restoration.
