A fairytale home

Sophie Ryder home and studio in Gloucestershire

Sophie came to early prominence as a sculptor in 1984 when she exhibited in Christie’s Inaugural Pick of the Graduates Show. Today, alongside her Lady-Hare, her more recent wire sculptures of huge hands and feet, thrust up and populate the fields around her tiny cottage, making it look like a fairytale home for an elf in a strange land of giants. Sophie herself is elfin, wild-haired with intense blue eyes, and surprisingly petite for someone creating such monumental work from wire, bronze, marble and even old toys, scrunched up paper and machine parts.
